Diane: The Tribune is in trouble, as is print media in general. My wife was working as a magazine editor in a building directly across the street from the Tribune for over 20 years and was just laid off.
The prevention I would suggest is that people be made aware of the harmful effects of the products that they use. I think one of the reasons that 80% of the MCS sufferers are women is due to household chemicals and the use of fragrances and make ups. (Estrogen may also enhance the effects). Telling people about cancer risks may not be enough. It's too remote to them and the linkages are not clear. They just say: "Everything causes cancer" and walk off. They should hear the stories of some of my clients who are literally living in tents or in their cars in the desert.
I will put a link to your site on my site. Are you interested in an article on disability applications and appeals for people with MCS?
By the way, I also have an organic farm where we serve 50 CSA members each year. www.WalkupHeritageFarm.com
Diane: I enjoyed your article on the household cleaning products. I am an attorney with MCS and am now specializing in representing people with EI/MCS all over the country on disabilty applications and appeals. I had to close my regular law office where I had been handling general disabilty cases for 25 years due to my own symptoms in 2001. One of the things I have trouble with on the disability cases sometimes is getting the judges to realize how difficult it is for people with MCS to avoid common cleaning products which are used in offices and factory settings. They tend to use the most toxic possible cleaners and when my clients show up at work the next day, they have to go home. Keep up the good work. If people want more information on the legal issues they can visit my website at www.MCSLegalHelp.com.
